As a Kentucky native, I write a lot of stories about traveling the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. It’s something I’ve done for years, even getting married in 2017 at Buffalo Trace Distillery, so you could say bourbon country holds a special place in my heart. What is the Bourbon Trail?
When most people think of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, they imagine the entire network of bourbon distilleries spread throughout the state. Itโs important to note that only a select group of distilleries are officially included on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
These distilleries are part of a marketing initiative aimed at promoting Kentucky’s bourbon industry, which includes iconic names like Makerโs Mark, Woodford Reserve, and Jim Beam. However, some of the best-known distilleries, such as Buffalo Trace, are not included on the official trail or its smaller counterpart, the Craft Tour.
This doesn’t mean you should limit your itinerary to only what the Bourbon Trail website suggests. Kentucky has an abundance of distilleries that offer unique and intimate experiences, even if they aren’t part of the official trail.
From historic distilleries to newer craft operations, thereโs no shortage of options for bourbon enthusiasts. In essence, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a network of distilleries recognized for producing world-class bourbon whiskey, but the broader bourbon scene in Kentucky has so much more to offer beyond the โofficialโ list.
Where is the Kentucky Bourbon Trail?
The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a network of distilleries around Louisville, Frankfort, and Bardstown. These cities are the heart of the trail. While the official trail includes certain distilleries, donโt forget to look beyond it. Kentucky has many other options worth visiting. Some of the best distilleries arenโt on the official Bourbon Trail, but they still offer amazing experiences.
To make your trip easier, Iโve created a full Bourbon Trail map. This map covers all distilleries, not just the ones listed on the official tour. Itโs organized by region, so you can plan your route more efficiently.
Whether you’re interested in large, well-known distilleries or smaller, hidden gems, this map will help you maximize your time and enjoyment. By exploring more than just the official trail, youโll get a deeper experience of Kentucky’s rich bourbon culture.
Best places to stay on the Bourbon Trail
Visiting distilleries in Kentucky forms a triangle, with a few distilleries outside this area. To see the most distilleries efficiently, staying in one of three main towns is your best option. Moving between them throughout your trip can also work. These three hubs are Bardstown, Louisville, and Frankfort. Each offers a different vibe and experience for visitors.
Bardstown, Louisville, or Frankfort… Which is best?
Bardstown is perfect for those who love small-town charm. Known as the โBourbon Capital of the World,โ itโs central to many of the most famous distilleries, including Makerโs Mark and Heaven Hill. Staying here immerses you in Kentuckyโs bourbon history. Itโs ideal for those who want a quieter, more laid-back experience.
Louisville, on the other hand, is for travelers who want more nightlife and city amenities. Itโs home to urban distilleries like Angelโs Envy and Old Forester. And of course the now thriving, “Whiskey Row.” This city is great for people who enjoy staying at trendy hotels, dining at top restaurants, and having a lively atmosphere after a day of bourbon tastings.
Frankfort offers a balance. Itโs smaller than Louisville but close to famous distilleries like Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve. Itโs a great spot if you want to be near bourbon history without the busyness of a large city.
By choosing where to stay based on your travel style, you can tailor your Bourbon Trail experience. Whether you prefer a quiet, historic town or a vibrant city, thereโs a spot for you.

The charming downtown, with its historic buildings and welcoming atmosphere, is well worth your time. You’ll find classic distilleries in the area, such as Heaven Hill, Jim Beam, and Willett, which are steeped in tradition.
However, Bardstown isnโt just about historyโitโs also home to newer, innovative producers like Bardstown Bourbon Company. It’s a unique little town. Making it an ideal destination for bourbon enthusiasts looking for a blend of history and modern craftsmanship.

Louisville
The most well-known and populous city in Kentucky, Louisville has a lot more to offer than Whiskey Row. This vibrant city features amazing museums, great food, and unique neighborhoods that you could easily spend days exploring. If you’re here for the bourbon, Louisville is a perfect starting point on the trail, largely because of its historic Whiskey Row.
At one time, many distilleries lined downtown, but now only a few remain. Among these are Old Forester and Evan Williams, which offer guided tours and tastings that highlight their rich histories.
Additionally, there are several distilleries within a 30-minute drive from Louisville, like Bulleit and Jeptha Creed, which are also worth a visit. The cityโs culinary scene, paired with its bourbon heritage, creates a dynamic experience. Plus, there are so many other activities in Louisville, too.

Its location allows for easy walking access to downtown distilleries, ensuring you can indulge in the bourbon trail while enjoying the hotelโs unique ambiance.

Probably the hardest town to find local places to eat, the capital city of Frankfort has a lot of great distilleries just a quick car ride away. While dining options may be limited, the city makes up for it with its proximity to some of the most renowned distilleries in the state.
From a base in Frankfort, you can easily explore Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, and Wild Turkey, among others. Each distillery offers unique tours and tastings that showcase their distinct craftsmanship.
Personally, I wouldn’t pick Frankfort first on my places to stay, but it is certainly centrally located to some popular distilleries.
