Dubrovnik Kayaking Tour: Everything You Need To Know
I booked a Dubrovnik kayaking tour on a whim, thinking it would be a scenic, laid-back way to spend a morning on the water. What I didn’t expect was just how different the city would feel from a kayak. Paddling alongside the towering fortress walls and around Lokrum Island gave me a whole new perspective. (And a serious arm workout.)
In this post, I’m breaking down exactly what to expect from a kayaking tour in Dubrovnik, who it’s best for, and what to bring so you’re fully prepared. I’ll also share a few honest insights I wish I’d known before booking, especially if you’re new to sea kayaking.
Whether you’re looking for an adventurous half-day trip or just want to escape the crowded streets of Old Town, a kayaking tour might be the most underrated thing to do in Dubrovnik.

Why Book a Kayaking Tour in Dubrovnik?
If you’re looking for a more adventurous and memorable way to experience the city, a Dubrovnik kayaking tour is one of the best options out there. While walking the old town walls is iconic, kayaking alongside them gives you an entirely different perspective. One you simply can’t get on foot.
These kayak tours also take you to places that are otherwise difficult to reach. From the hidden Betina Cave Beach to the rugged shores of Lokrum Island, you’ll see a side of Dubrovnik that most travelers miss.
It’s a perfect fit for anyone craving a break from the crowds or wanting something a bit more active than museums and walking tours. And since Dubrovnik is a relatively small destination, there aren’t a ton of standout activities beyond the usual sights, which is why this tour stood out so much to me.
If you’re visiting during warm weather and want a half-day activity that’s scenic, adventurous, and just the right amount of challenging, a kayaking tour is 100% worth it.
What to Expect On A Kayaking Tour
Most Dubrovnik kayaking tours follow a similar route. But, there are a few small differences to look out for when booking. Some companies offer single adriatic kayaks, while others pair you up in doubles. A few tours include snacks, lunch, or even a glass of wine at the end, while others keep it simple.
Nearly all tours begin at Dubrovnik’s West Harbor, just outside Pile Gate. You’ll start with a safety demonstration, get fitted with a mandatory life jacket, and then hear a short overview on how to paddle safely in open water. The guides are used to working with beginners, so don’t worry if it’s your first time in a sea kayak.

From there, the tour heads out along the edge of the Old Town walls, offering a truly unique view of the city. You’ll then paddle across the channel to Lokrum Island and follow the coastline around it. Most Dubrovnik kayaking tours include a stop at Betina Cave Beach, a small cove only accessible by water. You’ll get a chance to rest, swim, snorkel, or just float and take in the views.
Expect to be on the water for about 2.5–3 hours total, depending on your group and conditions.
Our Dubrovnik Kayaking Tour Experience
Taking a Dubrovnik kayaking tour is one of the most memorable ways to experience the city. It’s one thing to see the fortress walls from shore but it’s something else entirely to paddle right alongside them.
That said, this tour isn’t for everyone. And I only figured that out by doing it myself.
First off, the tour companies in Dubrovnik are impressively professional. Our guides were knowledgeable, safety-focused, and gave us helpful tips throughout the route. The kayaks were well-maintained and I never felt unsafe at any point. From start to finish, the experience gave us a completely new perspective of the city, especially when rounding Lokrum Island and taking in the views from the water.

But here’s what I wish I had known: kayaking in the Adriatic is nothing like paddling around a calm lake or river. The open water and strong currents near Lokrum can be tough, especially if you’re not used to it. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should feel confident in your physical ability to handle a few hours of real paddling.
We booked a morning tour in May, and even then, the sun was intense once we were out on the water. I can’t imagine doing it in the heat of the afternoon. If you’re booking a Dubrovnik kayaking tour, try to choose a morning time slot. And wear serious sun protection. Or, consider booking a sunset tour.
Best Kayaking Tours To book
While most Dubrovnik kayaking tours follow a similar route, paddling past the Old Town walls, around Lokrum Island, and stopping at Betina Cave Beach, the time of day and group vibe can change the experience completely. Some tours are designed for early risers and active travelers, while others are slower-paced with time for swimming, sunset views, or even wine.
Here are a few of the best-rated kayaking tours in Dubrovnik to consider, including the one I personally booked.
Morning Kayaking & Snorkeling Tour (My Pick)
If you want to beat the heat and enjoy calmer waters, this early morning Dubrovnik kayaking tour is your best bet. You’ll kayak past the Old Town, around Lokrum, and stop at Betina Cave for a swim and snorkel break. The pace is manageable but still active, so it’s a great choice for travelers who are up for a little physical effort with a scenic payoff.

Afternoon Dubrovnik Kayaking Tour
Prefer to sleep in? This afternoon kayaking tour follows the same general route but tends to have a livelier feel and slightly stronger sun, so bring sunscreen and stay hydrated. It still includes a stop at the beach for swimming and snorkeling, and is a great fit for travelers who want a classic kayaking experience but aren’t morning people.

Sunset Kayaking Tour with Wine
If you’re after golden hour views and a more relaxed vibe, this sunset Dubrovnik kayaking tour includes wine and a slower paddle pace. It’s ideal for couples, solo travelers, or anyone who wants the views without pushing too hard. It’s still the same route, but the experience feels completely different when the city starts to glow.

Not Sure About Kayaking? Book a Catamaran Instead
If kayaking sounds like too much effort (no shame… it’s tougher than it looks), another great way to experience Dubrovnik from the water is by catamaran. You’ll still get incredible views of the coastline and Lokrum Island, but with a drink in hand and no paddling required. It’s a great alternative if you want to stay dry and relaxed while still seeing the city from a different perspective.

What To Bring On Your Kayaking Tour
Most Dubrovnik kayaking tours will provide you with the basics, including a waterproof dry bag for your belongings and snorkeling equipment if there’s a swim stop. But there are a few things you’ll want to bring (or wear) to make the experience more comfortable:
- A waterproof phone pouch – Even with a dry bag, it’s nice to have your phone accessible for photos without worrying about splashes.
- Bathing suit or quick-dry clothes – You will get wet. Whether from paddling or jumping in at the beach, wear something that dries fast.
- Water shoes or sandals – Avoid anything you’d be upset to soak. Lightweight shoes that can handle water are ideal.
- Water bottle – You’ll be in the sun and paddling for a few hours. Staying hydrated is important.
- Sunscreen + sunglasses – The reflection off the water is no joke, even on overcast days.
Optional but useful: a light towel or small snack, especially if your tour doesn’t include one.
