How Many Days Should I Spend in Bacalar?

Most visitors spend one to three nights in Bacalar as part of a larger trip through the Yucatán Peninsula. This allows time to experience the Bacalar Lagoon, take a boat tour, and explore a few local spots.

But if you prefer a slower pace with more outdoor activities, you can easily stretch your stay to a week. Extra days give you time for kayaking at sunrise, visiting cenotes, and unwinding with a good book in a hammock on the lagoon. Bacalar’s laid-back atmosphere makes it a perfect place to unwind without feeling rushed.

How to Get to Bacalar

Bacalar isn’t the easiest place to get to. Located inland on a lagoon along the Yucatán Peninsula, the closest airport, Chetumal (CTM), only operates regional flights to Mexico City and Cancun. Instead, it’s usually cheaper and easier to fly into Tulum or Cancun—both with more flight options and better connections.

Tulum International Airport (TQO) is the closest major airport, about a 3-hour drive from Bacalar. Cancun International Airport (CUN) is further, around 5 hours away, but has the most flight options.

If Bacalar is your final stop, flying into Tulum makes the most sense. With more airlines now flying into the new airport, prices are competitive with Cancun, but you’ll save time on the road—giving you more time to soak up the magic of Bacalar Lagoon.

Getting Around bacalar

Bacalar is a small, walkable town, but having a plan for getting around will make your trip easier.

• Taxis via WhatsApp – The easiest way to get a taxi is by messaging Bacalar Taxi on WhatsApp. Most fares around town range from $3–$5 USD (50–100 MXN) but going to places like Los Rapidos is $10 USD each way.
• Colectivos – For a cheap and local option, you can take a colectivo. They’re used mostly by locals and run along the main roads, connecting Bacalar with nearby areas. It’s a budget-friendly way to get around, but schedules can be unpredictable.
• Biking – Many hotels and hostels offer free or cheap bike rentals, making it an easy way to explore.
• Walking – If you’re staying in the town center, most restaurants, shops, and the Zócalo are within walking distance.

Where to Stay in Bacalar

Bacalar has accommodations for every type of traveler. And, unlike Tulum or Cancun, Bacalar remains more affordable, offering great value for your money.

• Budget Hotels: $40–$70 per night
• Mid-Tier Hotels: $100–$175 per night
• Luxury Hotels: $200+ per night

Personally, I recommend staying at a hotel on the lagoon with a private dock. Why? Waking up to unreal turquoise water at your doorstep is an experience you won’t forget.

A private dock means easy access to swimming, paddle boarding, or just relaxing over the water—all without crowds. Many lagoon front hotels also provide free kayaks or SUPs, making it even easier to explore Bacalar’s stunning scenery and saving you money on daily rentals, too.

Best Bacalar Hotels on a Budget

Budget hotels in Bacalar are typically small guesthouses, hostels, or simple hotels offering basic but comfortable accommodations. Expect fan or air-conditioned rooms, private or shared bathrooms, and possibly a small pool.

Rooms tend to be more spacious, with air-conditioning, private balconies, and upgraded furnishings for a more comfortable stay.

This 3-day Bacalar itinerary covers the best activities, from kayaking at sunrise to floating through Los Rápidos. You’ll experience cenotes, sailing, and relaxing on the stunning Bacalar Lagoon. Whether you love adventure or relaxation, this itinerary helps you make the most of your trip.

Day 1: Arrival & Exploring Bacalar

Welcome to Bacalar! Whether you arrive by ADO bus, rental car, Tren Maya, or private transfer, take time to settle in and get ready to explore the Lagoon of Seven Colors.

Start your trip with lunch on the lagoon at La Playita, a popular but high-quality spot with a private dock, great atmosphere, and a mix of Mexican and international dishes. I ate here twice because their empanadas were to die for.

After lunch, head to your meeting point for an afternoon sailing tour on the lagoon. This tour typically includes unlimited drinks, a chance to swim in multiple areas of the lagoon, and stunning views. (I highly recommend this experience!) Pack a towel, sun hat and a sun shirt to protect your skin since reef-safe sunscreen is required to help preserve the lagoon’s delicate ecosystem.

Your sail ends at sunset, often with a homemade meal on board—plus plenty of time to enjoy the unlimited drinks while taking in the view.

Tip! Keep in mind the lagoon is closed to all motorized vehicles on Wednesdays, this includes sails. These closures are to ensure the natural environment can continue to thrive.

After your boat tour, head to Bacalar’s Zócalo, the town’s central park. Here, you’ll find street food vendors, souvenir stalls, and a lively evening atmosphere. Be sure to grab a marquesita or a churro from one of the food trucks—but keep in mind, most vendors only accept cash.

Day 2: Sunrise Kayaking, Cenote Azul & Los Rápidos

Start your day with a sunrise kayak ride on the Lagoon of Seven Colors. Before the boats and tourists arrive, the water is calm and glassy, creating a peaceful and unforgettable experience.

Afterwards, head to breakfast at one of Bacalar’s best cafes. I highly recommend BAMOA, where their breakfast bagel is incredible and the coffee is just as good. If you prefer a classic Mexican breakfast, they have great options. Another fantastic spot is Madre Masa, especially if you love fresh cinnamon rolls.

Once you’re fueled up, grab your day pack, sun hat, and reef-friendly sunscreen and head to Cenote Azul. This deep, open-water cenote is surrounded by lush greenery and costs only $2.50 USD to enter—a steal for such a beautiful spot. You can get there by riding a beach cruiser from your hotel or using WhatsApp to call a Bacalar taxi.

If you prefer something on the lagoon, consider Cenote Cocalitos Beach Resort instead. The entry fee is $5 USD per person for foreigners, and while it has a different vibe, it’s a great spot to relax in the water without spending much. Locals and tourists alike enjoy this budget-friendly way to experience the lagoon.

Next, take a taxi out of town to Los Rápidos, a natural lazy river with crystal-clear water and stromatolite formations. The current carries you downstream, making for a fun and relaxing float. The overall experience is crowded with overpriced drinks and food. But the natural wonder is unique and depending on your budget it might be worth a few hours of floating.

If you’d rather skip Los Rápidos, Sac-Ha Reserve is a great alternative. It’s highly rated, much cheaper, and offers kayak rentals so you can paddle to Los Rápidos instead. Just be aware that the current is strong, so you’ll need good stamina to paddle upstream.

End your day with dinner at one of the many local restaurants in Bacalar. I recommend Bacacrudo Cruderia Mazatleca. This cash-only small ceviche stand has great prices and some of the best ceviche I’ve had in Mexico, too.

Day 3: Lagoon Adventure & Departure

It’s your last day in Bacalar, so let’s make the most of it! Start your morning slow and relaxed with coffee and breakfast at one of Bacalar’s cozy cafes. Casa de Café y Té is a great choice, serving perfectly brewed lattes and huevos yucatecos—a satisfying way to refuel after yesterday’s adventures.

After breakfast, take in one last moment of Bacalar’s beauty with a final swim in the lagoon. If your hotel has a private dock, savor the peacefulness of the morning as you float in the clear water. If not, head to the Área Natural Protegida, a public swimming area where you can still enjoy the lagoon before saying goodbye.

Once you’ve had your last dip, head back to your hotel to pack up and check out. Whether you’re heading to Tulum, Cancun, or another destination, be sure to plan your transfer in advance. The ADO bus, private transfers, and rental car returns all require some coordination, so give yourself enough time to travel stress-free.

If you have extra time before leaving, grab a quick lunch or aguas fresca to go—a final taste of Bacalar before you set off on your next adventure!

Take to the Water with Kayaking or Paddleboarding

Glide across the Lagoon of Seven Colors in the peaceful morning light or just before sunset. Then the water is more peaceful, making it the perfect time to take in the lagoon. Rentals are available at many hotels and beach clubs, or your hotel might include them complimentary.

Guided tours offer eco-friendly ways to explore Bacalar’s hidden spots, too. Try this clear kayak adventure to get to really experience the beauty of the lagoon.

Join a Sail on the Bacalar Lagoon

Sailing tours take you to cenotes, Pirate’s Channel, and Bird Island. Many include unlimited drinks, snacks, and a sunset view. Getting on the water is one of the best ways to experience Bacalar’s stunning colors.

Swim in the Cenote Azul

This deep open-water cenote is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or relaxing at a lakeside restaurant. The water is incredibly clear and refreshing. Entry is cheap, and it’s easy to reach by bike or taxi- making it the perfect spot for a few hours of entertainment.

Relax at a Beach Resort

Cenote Cocalitos and other budget-friendly beach clubs offer lounge chairs, hammocks, and direct lagoon access. Enjoy fresh drinks, stunning views, and a laid-back atmosphere. Some resorts have day passes for added perks and even allow you to pack your own drinks and snacks (oftentimes for an additional fee).

Float Down Los Rapidos

This natural lazy river carries you through turquoise water and ancient stromatolite formations. You can swim, float, or rent a kayak. The current does the work, making it a relaxing and fun experience. Though keep in mind it does get rather crowded so come early and plan to share the waterways.

Explore San Felipe Fort + Museum

Bacalar has a history of pirate invasions and colonial battles. This 17th-century fort offers panoramic views of the lagoon. Inside, you’ll find artifacts, historical exhibits, and interactive displays. It’s right on the Zócalo so you can’t miss it.

Eat Street Food at the Zócalo 

Bacalar’s central park comes alive at night with local food vendors and souvenir stalls – especially on the weekends. Try a marquesita, tacos, or fresh churros. Bring cash, as most street vendors don’t take cards.
